India’s Dattu Baban Bhokanal finished fourth in the menas single sculls quarterfinal after posting a time of 6:59.89, and is out of medal contention as only the top three competitors move on to the semi-finals.
Bhokanal covered a distance of 2000m, but fell short by more than six seconds behind Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk (6:53.52) from Poland, to finish at the fourth place.
The quarterfinal was won by Croatia’s Damir Martin, the silver medallist at the London Olympics, with an exceptional timing of 6:44.44, ahead of second-placed Alan Campbell (6:49.41).
Army man Bhokanal, whose mother is an Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in India, clocked 7:21.67s in the Heats.
He started strongly, and was in second place at the 500metre mark, but was unable to hold onto the lead, and gradually slowed down to lose his chance of advancing.
