With a score of 84 runs the Indian left handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan became the fifth Indian opening batsman to record a fifty in maiden test innings in the Caribbean, following the league of Madhav Apte, Sunil Gavaskar, VVS Laxman and Ajay Jadeja. It is the second highest by an Indian batsman in the Caribbean after Salim Durani who had scored 104 at Port of Spain in April 1962.

Only four Indian batsmen have amassed more runs in their maiden Test innings vs West Indies in the Caribbean – Polly Umrigar – 130 at Port of Spain in 1952-53, Brijesh Patel – 115 not out at Port of Spain in 1975-76, Sanjay Manjrekar – 108 at Bridgetown in 1988-89 and Ajay Jadeja – 96 at St.John’s in 1996-97.

The partnership between Kohli and Dhawan of 105 for the third wicket broke the record between Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor for New Zealand vs West Indies in July 2012of 90 runs. Their average dismissal which is 110.80 for the third wicket – their tally being 554 in five innings innings is the third highest by a pair for the third wicket, with a minimum of five partnerships, behind 137.00 between Wally Hammond and Eddie Paynter and 145.25 between Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli has had a record win five successive tosses between Novemeber 2015 and July 2016 in Tests apart from the three Indian skippers Nari Contractor with 6 wins, Mohammad Azharuddin with 6 wins and Mahendra Singh Dhoni also with six wins.
