Another Dutch medal contender out!

Yuri van Gelder has been expelled from the Games after he violated team rules by going out for a night out of driking after he qualified for the ring finals. The Dutch team spokesman said that the 33 year old left the village on Saturday evening and then proceeded to spend the night celebrating and return early Sunday morning. He had violatedArules concerning alcohol consumption and leaving the team base.

This news comes just days after dutch cyclist,A Annamiek van Vleuten who was leading the women’s road race, crashed and subsequntly suffered three spinal fractures and a bad contusion. The race however was won by a another dutch cyclist, the only medal for them so far.

Yuri, the rings world champ in ’05 has a history of violating rules at major sporting events and in 2009 he was suspended after the Dutch Gymnastics Union found out that he was taking cocaine, less than 3 days before the national championships. And again inA2010, he was dropped from the team for theAGymnastics World Championships after he admitted to usingAcocaine. That tournament was to have been his comeback tourney after a one-year ban for cocaine use. He never learnt did he?

‘It’s terrible for Yuri, but this kind of behavior is unacceptable,’ Dutch team chef de mission Maurits Hendriks said a statement released by the dutch A’In sports terms this is a disaster, but we had no other choice given the violation of our values.’ The dutch have imposed strict conditions on their team, and are forbidden from even entering Rio. A bit strict in my opinion but after all they are hand picked athletes for their country and returning back hungover does hamper performance, or so I’ve heard.
