Portugal defender Pepe has joined Turkish champions Besiktas on a free transfer after his Real Madrid contract expired.

The former Real Madrid centre-back, who was released by the Champions League winners last month, is believed to have signed a three-year deal. Pepe was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and had said he received offers from Premier League clubs.

The 34-year-old played nearly 350 games for the Spanish side after signing from Porto in 2007, winning three La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.

The defender played for Portugal in their Confederations Cup campaign where they reached the semi-finals before losing to Chile on penalties.AHe scored in the controversial 2-1 victory over MexicoAin the third-place play-off on Sunday.

And despite being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, the Portuguese defender has agreed to a two-year deal with Besiktas, with the option of a third year, according toAreports in Turkey.

Among his new team-mates at Besiktas are former Liverpool player Ryan Babel and ex-Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Demba Ba.
