29th August, 1905 – Birth of one of the legendary Indian Hockey player & captain, who helped the nation to be recognised as a dominant force in the field of sports in pre-Independence era.

Recognized as the “The Wizard” & “The Magician” Major Dhyan Chand represented the nation in the game of hockey at international level (1926-1949), close to 25 years during which he scored 570 goals in 185 matches. (Stats as per the autobiography)

Representing “British India” Hockey team, the Wizard won 3 Gold medals in the 1928 (Amsterdam), 1932 (Los Angeles) & 1936 (Berlin) Summer Olympics.

In 1932, Major Dhyan Chand netted the ball 8 times against USA in the 24-1 dominating victory.

The record was intact for 86-years and was being shattered by India thrashing Hong Kong 26-0 at the 18th Asiad in 2018.

Such was the dominance of this player & the Government of India renamed the National Stadium in New Delhi to Dhyan Chand National Stadium in 2002 in his honour.

A small tribute to such a great player ever produced as India celebrates its “National Sports Day” & 117th birth anniversary in remembrance of the heroics by “Major Dhyan Chand”.
