Indian Super League clubAFC Pune City suffered a huge blow today, as their marquee player Eidur Gujohnsen has been ruled out of the 3rd season.
With the 3rd season kicking off on the 1st of October in Guwahati, the Pune team desperately neededAtheir Icelandic star as they face Mumbai City Fc on the 3rd forAthe Maharashtra derby!! But this isn’t the only injured player, as their midfielder Andre Bikey has also injured his tendon which, effectively ends his season.A”Eidur is the leader of the team and both him and Andre are excellent players and amazing human beings. It’s a rude shock to me to learn about their injuries and their presence will be missed by everyone in the club. Eidur is very disappointed himself,” said Pune City’s CEOAGaurav Modwell
The 38 year old who once played for Chelsea, Fc Barcelona and has won multiple titles with them, was injured during preseaon training. Sources at the club say that Eidur Gudjohnsen is returning home today. ‘Gudjohnsen is leaving for home tomorrow. He suffered an injury at a pre-season training session,’ a club source said in an interview. It is still not clear whether Eidur Gudjohnsen was injured in Spain, where preseaon matches were played or right here in India.
The Iceland manAhowever, was not a part of the practice match against Ozone FC which took place earlier this week. This only adds to the trouble, with AmoreAinjury woes as Andre Bikey who joined the Maratha Stallions fromANorthEast United FC, has also picked up an injury. This will certainly affect the the Pune outfit who only have Edardo Ferreira as the foreign centre-back in their squad.
If this too wasn’t enough, then this might make fans cringe. The Pune boss faces a touchline ban for the first 4 games after his “antics” during the second leg of last season’s semi finals. The All India Football Federation Disciplinary Committee slapped him with a fine of 5 lakhs rupees as well. This means that the boss will miss crucial matches against Mumbai City Fc, Fc Goa, United Fc and the Kerela Blasters.
Club officials are expected to make an official announcement tomorrow.
