Four of the Top 10Aa no show at the Olympics
DespiteAthe fact that many athletes have pulled out of the Olympics due to the Zika virus and it’s deadly effects, World number 2 Andy Murray has decided not to become one of them. He instead wants to defend his medal, but at the same time is sorry that possible medal contenders Rodger Federer and Stan Wawrinka and four of the top ten tennis players in the world will not be participating.
The virus has many athletes concerned, including USA goalkeeper Hope Solo, Romania tennis ace Simona Halep among others. Athletes who have pulled out include Golden State Warriors point guard Stepheen Curry, World number 1 golfer Jason Day and Rory McIlory. With Brazil being one of the most affected by the virus which can be transmitted via mosquitoes, Blood transfusion and sexual. And as of 2016 the virus has no known medication or vaccines. But at the same time, to stay at home and skip representing your country, the highest honorAan athlete can ever have or attend and get a virus that has no vaccine or medicine that can cure it??
Murray still has a lot of competition in Rio, as a lot of the top 20 players happen to be participating in the Olympics, including Novak Djokovic who is considered to be one of the favourites, with Murray being the other. ‘A lot of the top 20 players are here, although unfortunately there a few of the top 10 missing, some of them citing Zika as being the reason and a couple of injuries, which is unfortunate. Normally, most players raise their game when they are playing for their country.’ said Murray who won his second Wimbledon title less than a month ago.
As Tennis player Jack Sock said in an interview ‘For me, itas something I would never miss, if I had the chance to represent my country on the biggest stage in sports,a? he said. a?a?For me, itas a no-brainer. Things could happen there, I would still go and still risk it.’ You go Jack, I’ll just stay here and watch..
