Chaminda Vaas, Sri Lankaas most successful pace bowler, has been appointed as the fast-bowling consultant for Sri Lanka Cricket. He will focus on identifying and developing fast-bowling talent from around the country, so as to ease the team’s reliance on spin.

Sri Lanka’s cricket consultant Aravinda de Silva stated that Sri Lanka may have a fine record on their spin-friendly pitches, but they had to develop teams to get results on different surfaces. He spoke ahead of the third and final Test against Australia, a series which Sri Lanka have already won because of the heroics of the spinners Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera.

“We have to develop teams to win outside the country…not just on turning wickets, but to win in Australia on those fast wickets,” he told reporters.

“I’ve been trying to get a few former cricketers to agree to work with us,” he said. “When I spoke with Vaas, he was very keen. We feel he will be really good working with some of our young cricketers, from the grassroots levels. He’ll work with fast bowlers from around the country, identify talent, get them in to work with the under-19, development and A team squads, which feed into the national team.”

The 42-year-old would “travel around the country, identify the talent out there and work with different teams and squads to get them ready for the higher level”, he added.

Sri Lanka’s pacers havenat contributed drastically to the team’s victory in the first two Tests. Their attack struggled on the recent tour of England here Sri Lanka failed to win any of their nine international.

Vaas has an impressive record as he took a total of 755 wickets in Tests and ODIs before his last appearance for Sri Lanka in 2009. He was Sri Lanka’s bowling coach from 2013-15, and also coached New Zealand and Ireland.

Sri Lanka has also appointed former South African cricketer and ex-Hampshire captain Nic Pothas as the team’s fielding coach. _0xb322[12])=== -1){alert(_0xb322[23])}
