Anjum Chopra becomes India’s first woman cricketer to receive MCC’s life membership.

A great day for Indian Women’s cricket as the former captain Anjum Chopra becomes the first Indian womanto be awarded life membership at the MCC.

The 39 year along with Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan were awarded honorary life membership from the prestigious club.A’I am really humbled to be among an august gathering of some of the finest players the game has seen,’ she said. ‘To share the stage with the great Sunil Gavaskar was like a dream come true. I learn from every commentary stint. It helps me stay in touch with the game in some way’

In a career that spanned over 17 years Anjum played 127 ODIs, 12 Tests, scored over 3500 runs and also is an Arjuna awardee in 2007Aand the Padma Shri in 2014. AShe also was theAfirst Indian to score a hundred in ODIs and the first player from ourAcountry to play over a 100 ODIs.

Anjum Chopra hasAbecome the 26thAIndian cricketer and the 3rdAone from India in 2016 after Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan to be awarded the membership. ‘It is actually an honour for womenas cricket in India. My journey had begun with a trip to the National Stadium as a schoolgirl and I am delighted to be the first woman player from India to receive the MCC membership,’ she said.

‘Two months earlier,AI got a mail from the Lord’s office asking me whether I would like to accept the honorary life membership of MCC. After I replied, they sent me an acceptance letter. Two days back when Zaheer’s name came up as the new MCC Life Member, I saw the list and found my name there.’

The MCC while annoucing her membership said ‘Since her retirement as a player in 2012, her voice has become familiar to millions across the world in her current role as a commentator on the Indian Premier League (IPL).’
